Lower East Side in the 1980’s

When you talk about the Lower East Side it can conjure up images of crowded streets, screaming kids, pushcarts and shouting street vendors, and a community of immigrants all working tirelessly to make their lives livable and hopefully better. I went to high school down there and a few years later in the early 1980’s, I returned with my camera to capture a bit of what was and a bit of what it had become.

Orchard Street was still a buzzing hive of shoppers and shops, and a few pickle stands were still selling their briny wares along Essex Street. But what I did manage to capture forty years ago is now sadly all gone, these photos are all there is to remind me of those days and show you a bit of what it was like.
